Ladybug, Ladybug fly away home.....

Pre K released 3,000 ladybugs today in the MDE butterfly garden.  It was very exciting.  We are also  closely watching a preying mantis case which should release approximately 700 preying mantis babies in the next 2 weeks!  A special thanks to Mrs. Cela for providing the insects!

Butterflys, Buttercups and Beachballs

PK is right in the middle of our unit on insects.  The children are learning what the characteristics of an insect are.  They have also learned about the lifecycle of a butterfly, and observed the symmetry in the butterfly wings .  Ask your child what he/she knows about insects.  Ask them to tell you what they know about symmetry.
In our next unit of study,  the children will learn about the needs of plants and seeds.  They will also observe our butterfly garden and its plants.
We have introduced all 26 letters and sounds and are putting the letters together to form words.  I am truly amazed by the kids and how many words they are able to spell this year.  I am seeing their writing improve each day.  Please continue to encourage your child to read the readers provided in their homereader bag.  This will help with their fluency and build confidence.  Homereader  bags are due each Monday.
Mark your calendars for the PK fieldtrip on May 23rd to the water park.   Please send an email if you would like to chaperone this event.

Happy Easter!

We have just concluded our unit on Farm. The children loved making puppets and retelling the story of The Little Red Hen.   The puppets will be coming home soon.  See if your child can retell the story to you.  Our next unit of study will be Insects.  Yea!  The kids were already observing "bugs" on the playground today to determine if they insects or not.  Ask your child how he/she knows if it is or is not an insect.
We sent home our field trip permission slips for the Zoo yesterday.  If you have not signed and returned it; please do so.  We ask that children wear the Zero the Hero or MDE t-shirts with shorts/jeans and tennis shoes.  All lunches should be in a plastic Ziploc bag-no lunch boxes please.

Have a blessed weekend!

Cowboys, Farm and Fieldtrips

PK cowboys and cowgirls had a great time dancing last Friday.  Our class has made bluebonnets and Texas flags.  We have learned about cowboys clothes and their purpose.  We will end this unit of study by going to the Livestock show next Tuesday, March 5th.  Parents who have agreed to chaperone will need to bring $10.00 for their entrance fee.  Thanks to each of your for helping with this trip.

PK will be learning about farm animals, which is always a big hit.  We will read and sequence some of our favorite farm books- Little Red Hen and Three Little Pigs.  We will also make puppets to use with our friends to retell the story of The Little Red Hen.  The children will be learning how to draw a few farm animals and even make an animal for their PK memory book.
In math we are working on fact families for 3, 4 and 5.  You may hear your child talk about “bean math”.  This is a fun and concrete way to teach math concepts and facts.
Your child will be bringing home a reader bag with 3 paper readers next week.  These readers may be read over the break, and you may keep them at home for future practice.  Please send the bag and reading log back to school on Monday,  March 18th.

Pre K is Very Busy Reading and Writing in 2013!

Happy New Year!  We hope all of you had a wonderful winter break! The children are excited to be back and are very busy learning about winter and bears. They have enjoyed painting snowmen and reading stories about bears.

The letters and sounds that we have worked on since winter break are W,and  X.    All of these letters begin in the top left corner.  Our next group of letters is called the center starter letters.  Please look at the difference on the Handwriting Without Tears practice papers they bring home.
The sight words  we have worked on are: can, see, I, at, is, are, the, like, a, on, here and look.  If your child is having difficulty with these words, please point them out to your child as you read with them at home.  As your child begins to bring home sentence homework, let your child rebuild the sentence by  manipulating  each word individually.  Mix them up and let them make their own sentence.  Keep these sentence pieces at home to use in the future.  See if your child can use the words to make a new sentence.
Please remember that home reader bags are due each Monday.  This will ensure that your child is prepared to receive his/her new reading book each week.
After your child has read the book, please remember to sign the slip and return it in the plastic bag.  The list should only consist of the titles we are sending home in the reader bag.  The entire series My A Book, My B Book, etc. may be kept at home for additional practice.....  Other books are to be returned.   If you have a question regarding a title, send it back and we will return it out of the bag and in his/her folder.  Whew!  Any additional questions…just ask and we will be happy to clarify.
